Meeting Minutes from 9/25/2014

Hey gang! We had a great meeting yesterday; thank you for all of you who came and participated.

Here are the minutes:

The group went over the logic model that was turned in to DSHS as Rebecca explained the strategies and planned activities such as retail access data collection, compliance checks, and making TABC training mandatory.

Discussed workgroup led by teens. Group agreed that was a good idea as teens are more likely to listen to their peers and know what is going on in schools. Group wanted to find out what the current “drug dog” policy, etc. was currently.

Group discussed the usefulness of the retail data collection to possibly make training mandatory. If we can show that there’s a correlation between retailers not doing training and the number of beverages being sold to minors, that will be good for legislators to know.

Group discussed how to get young people involved in the coalition or compliance checks. Career services at Kilgore College may be useful as the students need mandatory volunteer hours.

Group discussed parent education opportunities for minors who get charged with possession (Rebecca has had some difficulty finding out more about this: the teen court and the municipal court both say the other handles MIP charges). Group wondered if parents are even made aware of whenever their child is charged. A possible avenue might be MADD’s “Power of the Parent” program. Could be possible for MADD to offer training to coalition members. There are classes for minors who get charged with possession, but not a class for their parents, and not in Kilgore. The one thing that parents ARE required to attend is the trial. Could there be a way for a judge to require parents to speak with us at that time?

The group discussed LOA’s and MOU’s and how we can partner with each other. Group will email back and forth to discuss further on an individual basis.

Group discussed a need for a community calendar as members’ agencies have events going on that may be beneficial to partner for.

Group discussed new CVS initiative to take back drugs, but more information is needed. Some drugs need an incinerator to be safely destroyed, and some police stations don’t have an incinerator. Would there be a way to fund raise for local police departments who need one?

Group adjorned at 1:00 p.m.
